Misfires, timing components, belts, starters and alternators, transmission service, axles and driveline — the work that follows a diagnosis rather than preceding it.
Almost everything on this page is work that should follow a diagnosis rather than a guess. These are the expensive repairs, and they are the ones where replacing the wrong component costs the most.
The distinction worth understanding is between maintenance items and failure items. A timing belt is maintenance: it has an interval, and replacing it before it breaks is vastly cheaper than after, because on many engines a broken belt bends valves and turns a $1,200 job into an engine. A starter is a failure item: you replace it when it fails, and replacing it early buys nothing.
Knowing which is which is most of what a good shop is for. We will tell you plainly when something is a genuine interval item that is due, and equally plainly when something can wait or be monitored.

Do I really need the timing belt done at the interval?
If your engine has a belt rather than a chain, and the engine is an interference design, then yes — this is one of the few genuine "do it before it breaks" items on a car. A broken belt on an interference engine lets valves meet pistons, and the result is a repair several times the price of the belt. We will tell you which type your engine is, and if it has a chain we will tell you it does not need doing.
Why is the water pump quoted with the timing belt?
Because on many engines the pump is driven by the belt and sits behind the same covers. Doing them together adds parts cost but almost no labour; doing them separately means paying the same five hours of labour twice. It is not an upsell, it is the arithmetic, and we will show you the two figures side by side.
My battery is three years old. Should I just replace it?
Test it first — it takes minutes and we charge $89 for the full charging and starting system test. Florida heat is genuinely harder on batteries than cold is, and three to four years is a realistic life here rather than the five to six you might get further north. But a test is still better than a guess, partly because a failing alternator will kill a new battery just as fast as the old one.
Do you rebuild transmissions?
We service transmissions — fluid, filter, external components, and the diagnosis that tells you what is actually wrong. Internal rebuilds are specialist work and we are honest about where that line falls. If a diagnosis points to an internal failure we will say so, explain the realistic options, and not quietly start a job that belongs somewhere else.

Finding out is its own job, priced on its own, and what you own at the end of it is a written finding you can take anywhere — including somewhere else.
The system you notice only when it is wrong. Pads and rotors, brake fluid, calipers and lines, tires, balancing and four-wheel alignment.
In this city the air conditioning is not a comfort item and the cooling system is not a seasonal one. Performance testing, leak finding, compressors, radiators and water pumps.
Oil and filter, fluids, filters, belts, plugs and the mileage-interval services, each priced as a line item rather than discovered at the counter.
