Oil and filter, fluids, filters, belts, plugs and the mileage-interval services, each priced as a line item rather than discovered at the counter.
The interval service is where the auto industry does most of its quiet damage to its own reputation. A "60,000-mile service" is not one thing — it is a bundle, and the contents of that bundle vary enormously between shops and between manufacturers.
Our position is that you should see the bundle. The tables below list what is in each interval service, with each line priced separately, so you can compare our figure against anybody else’s and see exactly what is different.
You can also decline any line in it. If your transmission fluid was done eighteen months ago, you do not need it again, and it comes out of the service and off the price. A shop that will not unbundle its interval service is telling you something.
The one thing worth adding for this climate: the air conditioning, the battery and the cooling system all work harder here than the interval assumes. Those three are worth actually checking rather than ticking.
An interval service here is a bundle of individually priced lines, and you may decline any of them. If a fluid was done recently, it comes out of the service and off the price. Ask for the itemised version at write-up and you will get it.

Why does your 60,000-mile service cost more than the shop down the road?
It may well not — but the only way to find out is to compare what is in each one, and that is why the lines are published separately above. Interval services are bundles, and two bundles with the same name routinely contain different work. Take our itemised list to the other shop and ask which lines theirs includes. If theirs is genuinely cheaper for the same work, that is useful information and you should use it.
Do I need full synthetic oil?
If your manufacturer specifies it, yes, and using conventional oil in an engine designed for synthetic can affect both the engine and the warranty. If your manufacturer does not specify it, synthetic is a reasonable choice in this climate but it is a choice rather than a requirement, and we will not pretend otherwise. We will tell you which category your car falls into.
What counts as severe service, and does it apply to me?
Short trips where the engine never fully warms, extended idling, stop-and-go traffic and sustained high ambient temperatures. In Jacksonville a large share of ordinary commuting meets at least two of those, which is why the severe-service interval is the realistic one for most drivers here even though it feels like the manufacturer is being cautious.
Can you use my own parts or oil?
For some items, yes, and we will tell you which. The trade-off is warranty: we warrant our work and the parts we supply, and we cannot warrant a part we did not supply. For an air filter that is a reasonable trade. For brakes or ignition components, usually not, and we will explain why rather than simply refuse.

Finding out is its own job, priced on its own, and what you own at the end of it is a written finding you can take anywhere — including somewhere else.
The system you notice only when it is wrong. Pads and rotors, brake fluid, calipers and lines, tires, balancing and four-wheel alignment.
In this city the air conditioning is not a comfort item and the cooling system is not a seasonal one. Performance testing, leak finding, compressors, radiators and water pumps.
Misfires, timing components, belts, starters and alternators, transmission service, axles and driveline — the work that follows a diagnosis rather than preceding it.
